The Craft of the Crèche: Materials and Techniques

November 14, 2017–January 7, 2018

This selection of LUMA’s beloved small-scale crèches explores various materials and techniques

utilized to illustrate the figures, themes, and joys of the Nativity. Materials range from common

mediums such as wood and clay, and expand to include some unexpected objects, including

corn husks, handcrafted nails, coconuts, and even an ostrich egg. This unique assortment of

crèches highlights the heritage and skills of artisans from around the world.

10th Annual Art and Faith of the Crèche: The Collection of James

and Emilia Govan

This perennial favorite returns.The story of Mary, Joseph and Jesus has great appeal throughout

the world. See how artists across the globe depict the Nativity with clothes, architecture, and

figures from their native lands.

Beam It Out/ Bring It In

July 1, 2017–January 7, 2018

In 2016, archi-treasures launched the Front Porch Project at the Germano Milgate Apart-

ments, a 350-unit affordable housing complex in South Chicago. An artistic intervention

into the isolated culture of subsidized housing, the Front Porch Project examines the

dichotomy between the ideal and real front porch that can be found in disinvested neigh-

borhoods like South Chicago.
