T

his past summer, an object from the D’Arcy

collection made its way across the Atlantic

when LUMA had the honor of loaning one

of its works to the Rijksmuseum. The Dutch

museum displayed

The Virgin and Child on a Crescent

Moon

as part of its exhibition entitled

Small Wonders:

Late Gothic Micro-Carvings from the Low Countries.

Taking place in Amsterdam from June to September, the

show featured Dutch-carved religious boxwood figurines

from the sixteenth century utilized for both personal

devotion and diversion. Normally on display in the

Medieval Gallery of the Martin D’Arcy S.J. Collection,

the

Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon

was requested

to be part of this special exhibition at this distinguished

art museum.

The Virgin and Child on a Crescent Moon

is an intricate

and petite piece, making it a perfect addition to the

Rijksmuseum’s exhibition of “small wonders.” In this
