Dear Members and Friends:

2016 marks a year of transitions for both LUMA and Loyola University. After

a long search, Dr. Jo Ann Rooney was chosen as the 24th president of Loyola

University Chicago. To welcome Dr. Rooney, LUMA asked her to select the crèche

of the year for the annual

Art and Faith of the Crèche

exhibition. The cover of

this issue of

The Lumanary

features Dr. Rooney’s selection, a wooden nativity

scene crafted by Joan and David Kolter of North Hampton, United Kingdom.

This elegant crèche with its striking smooth lines is made from stiffened fabric,

polished hardwood and oak veneer. It is both delicate and refined as it conveys

the richness of the story of Christ’s birth with minimal detail. Now in its ninth

year, LUMA’s annual

Art and Faith of the Crèche

exhibition has become a holiday

tradition for LUMAmembers, the Chicago community, and out-of-town visitors.

Due to the generosity of James Govan, who continues to donate prized pieces

from his personal crèche collection to LUMA each year, LUMA is able to display

new acquisitions next to well-loved favorites (see interview with Mr. Govan in

this issue).
