WHAT’S ON THE PROGRAM?

12

R A V I N I A F A M I L Y F U N G U I D E

The

title

is the name of

the piece or song that will be

performed. Often you will find

the musical key that piece is

played in next to the title. (A key

tells the musicians which notes

they will be using most of the

time.) It may give a number that

identifies the place the work

holds in a composer’s output.

Sometimes it will specify the

instrument that is featured in

the piece.

The

composer

is the person who

wrote the music.

They write notes the

musicians will play

on their instruments,

just as a writer uses

words to tell a story.

The

guest

artist

is the

featured musician

of the evening.

Many times this

will be a famous

instrumentalist or

singer who is the

soloist with the

orchestra. There

can be more than

one guest artist on

a concert.

The

conductor

directs the

entire orchestra and interprets

the music. The conductor’s baton

and hand movements tell the

musicians what to do. He or she

sets the tempo (which is how fast

or slow the music is played) and

dynamics (how loud or soft), along

with a hundred other details.

The conductor makes sure that

all the musicians in the orchestra

play together like one great, big

instrument.
