DELIGHTS AND OBSESSIONS
by Mary Arhondonis, Events Coordinator
After your visit to LUMA, do not rush home. After all, it’s summer, so make
a day of the elements: sky, earth, and water. Firstly, sky. Walk to the John Hancock
Center where a captivating sight greets you in the south lobby—the sculpture

by artist Wolfgang Buttress. Art and science merge in this spherical work of lights,
suspended from a mirrored ceiling. Comprised of thousands of illuminated nodes, it
maps the stellar configuration seen in the Northern Hemisphere. The artist consulted
with an astrophysicist to create this wonder. Look beneath the sculpture at the black
infinity pool, in whose perfectly smooth surface the sculpture is reflected. You’ll
instinctively reach out to cause a ripple in the black abyss, affirming it is indeed water.
This reflection creates a feeling of infinity (and perhaps a yearning for answers beyond).
Then head east along Delaware towards the lake to Pelago Ristorante (201 E. Delaware Place) for high-end Italian cuisine. The
restaurant’s contemporary white décor and a tasteful still life makes you sigh and long to visit the Amalfi Coast. Your meal begins
with a selection of artisan breads. I recommend the warm sardine salad, tossed in olive oil and lemon, laid atop fresh greens, cherry
tomatoes, asparagus, and beets. Try the truffle fettuccini arrives. Simply tossed with butter and parmesan, it creates the perfect earthy
symphony. The nutty aroma is maddening. For dessert, enjoy the coconut panna cotta, served with a splash of caramel sauce and
flecks of fresh mint. The attentive service and “food made with love” will warrant a repeat visit. To burn off the “love,” head one block
east to Lake Michigan’s walkway for a stroll, ending the day with the calming effects of water. Ah, a day of such delightful diversions!
