Following the Box

functions as a living example of

how a project can lead us to unexpected places,

making unique connections and new artistic

inquiries. Exhibiting

Following the Box

at a

university art museum provides an opportunity

for a range of interdisciplinary collaborations

with students, faculty, artists, and the public.

Related programs will include curator and artist

talks, a film screening, and panel presentations by

University of Chicago’s Dr. Ralph Nicholas and

Loyola’s Dr. Sarita Heer.

This summer, Tonika Lewis Johnson’s second

exhibition at LUMA,

Folded Map,

critically

examines Chicago’s history of segregation and its

presence today. This multimedia exhibition will

feature photographs, a film, and a mural-sized,

interactive map with information provided by

Chicago’s Metropolitan Planning Council. This

ongoing photography project connects residents

who live at corresponding addresses on the North

and South sides of the city.Through strategic visual

comparisons,

Folded Map

draws attention to how

segregation impacts Chicago neighborhoods and

their residents.

We will also feature artist Victoria Martinez in the

WorksonPaperGallery.

CelestialHouse

,Martinez’s

first solo museum exhibition, will include mixed

media works inspired by her childhood home in

the Pilsen community. In correspondence with

this exhibition, we are thrilled to work with the

Poetry Foundation in bringing José Olivarez and

Edra Soto to LUMA for public programs.

We thank you for your support and look forward

to seeing you at LUMA!

Sincerely,

Natasha Ritsma, PhD

Curator

This June, our staff bid farewell to Grace Iverson,

LUMA Education/Curatorial Fellow. Grace worked

at LUMA for five years and was instrumental in

organizing the docent program, researching and

writing about our rotating exhibitions, designing

promotional materials and museum publications,

creating educational material for both the rotating

exhibitions and the permanent collection, as well

as providing programming and outreach support.

She began working at LUMA her freshman year as

a Gallery Manager, by her sophomore year she was

hired as the Education Intern, and was hired as a

full-time Fellow immediately after she graduated

from Loyola with a B.A in Anthropology and Art

History. In reflecting on her time at LUMA, Grace

said “It has been an absolute joy to get to know and

work with the LUMA community and collection

over the years!” The Loyola University Museum of

Art staff, interns, and volunteer docents will dearly

miss Grace and wish her the best in all of her future

endeavors.
